After watching documentaries about FGM, I found the one to be most effective was 'The Cut'. Firstly, even the name of the documentary is effective because its short and precise. Furthermore, there is a narrator over the documentary which not only gives you factual information but also anecdotes. This is effective as it allows the audience to gain a clearer understanding of what the documentary is about. Also the use of a story is effective because it adds the sense of realism - it makes the audience understand the commonness of FGM and the affect it has. As sell as this it also gains an emotional response from the audience; you feel bad for the girl in the story.
Personally I found the documentary very effective through its pure shock factor. Some of the information given is so shocking (like the age of the girls going through FGM) and this makes me realise the seriousness of the issue. Lastly, the use of bringing in culture in the documentary through imagery and music gave me a wider outlook and realising how different cultures view things so differently.
